Places in Jordan - Shaubak Castle

Another crusader fortress built in the 12th century by King Baldwin the second, therefore it was named in honour of him as 'Montréal' (the royal mountain). They built this castle to maintain a line of sight with Kerak castle, and to keep an eye on the movement of both the trade and pilgrimage routes. The same castle was re-used again by Muslims, but it fell into ruins as a result of earthquakes. For this reason local Bedouins removed the stones to build their houses in the Bedouin villages nearby.
