Gadara means "fortification". One of the spectacular cities, established in the fourth century B.C. by the Greeks, and re-used by the Romans in the first century B.C. its importance originated because of its strategic location on the trade and pilgrimage routes from Syria and Palestine. It is located above the hot baths of Hammah (the hot springs, where Jesus took out bad spirits from a man and put them into pigs).
From the spectacular viewing point, the visitor can see the Golan Heights, Lake Tiberius (Sea of Galilee), and Jabal al sheikh in both Lebanon and Syria.
